Art

Intent

At SWINS we value Art as an important part of supporting our children’s ability to develop their individual creativity, express their ideas and understanding and to work both individually and collaboratively with others. We want our children to have a desire to explore creativity and also to be confident when using a broad range of art skills and techniques.

We intend to engage children’s curiosity and imagination to promote an interest and fascination of the arts to all of our learners by studying the works of a wide range of artists and artistic techniques. We provide opportunities for children to be outward looking in finding inspiration from different creative and cultural traditions. This is combined with their personal use of a rich and varied range of quality resources.

Our aim is to ensure that children are confident approaching artwork, feel a strong sense of achievement, value the impact of art within our own lives and are able to reach their full potential.

Our hope for them is that by doing this, they will develop a love and enjoyment of the arts that they will continue to develop and refine as they continue throughout their school life and beyond.

Implementation

At SWINS, we use a well developed, consistent and coherent planning that ensures children are provided with planned lessons, assessment, progression, and engaging resources to support all the requirements of Art within the National Curriculum and related strands of the EYFS.

Across school planning refers to previous learning and builds on the skills and knowledge that the children have already been taught in this subject area.

All children have age appropriate opportunities to:

  • Generate ideas that are original
  • Make their own work and use materials and techniques purposefully
  • Evaluate, understand and improve their work
  • Acquire knowledge and understanding of the world of art, craft and design

Through a variety of creative, practical art activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and range of distinctive skills needed to engage in the exploration of a variety of art forms and their differing media. Children learn the specific vocabulary of Art and design and also the potential to use Art to express emotions and feelings. Where possible and relevant children are given the opportunity to take part in place base learning which brings alive their study.

We also plan to ensure children are aware of the contribution, impact, and enjoyment of Art to the world within which they live.

Impact

At SWINS, we are able to measure the impact that Art and Design has had for all children by:

  • Determining the extent to which objectives are met within each lesson and overall, at the end of each unit.
  • Images of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Moderation staff meetings where pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
  • Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.

By the time the children leave SWINS, we want them to have developed a passion for art and creativity whilst working both independently and collaboratively. As learners they will have grown in confidence when using a range of tools and techniques, enabling them to implement their skills into their own pieces of artwork. Through their developed knowledge of Art, the children will be able to be critical thinkers whereby they can respond to their own pieces of work but also the work of others.
