Intent
PSHRE is at the heart of our school vision and ethos.
We are dedicated to ensuring that our school is a happy, safe respectful and caring place.
At SWINS we believe a high quality PSHE education will help children acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future. We are committed to helping our children grow and build positive mental health.
PSHRE lessons will help our children develop the qualities and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. It makes a significant contribution to pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Behaviour and attitudes to learning are underpinned by values that are taught through PSHRE lessons. We expect high standards of behaviour and good manners throughout the school.
At SWINS, PSHRE will equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. A big part of that is our focus on wellbeing and building children’s confidence and resilience. We want our children to be the best then that they can be. Therefore we are delighted to be a my Happymind school.

As a whole school programme grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing, myHappymind helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children’s resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. myHappymind also teaches the children how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves! myHappymind is a mental health and well-being programme to support children in learning habits, to support their own mental health. It covers all the mandatory objectives from the DfE Relationships Education Curriculum and also around 70% of the PSHE objectives.

At South Walney Infant & Nursery School we follow the EYFS and national curriculum aims. We primarily use my Happymind to deliver those aims. PSHRE is planned and taught as a separate subject and is also integrated through a range of curriculum areas, it also follows the statutory guidance set out in the Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (see separate policy). Children have weekly PSHE lessons. Circle time is regularly used within curriculum time giving the children time to reflect, think, discuss and debate issues alongside the use of Picture news which covers relevant world wide events with clear links to British values. Children also have the opportunity to listen to other people, being taught to respect and value individual ideas and opinions. The PSHE curriculum is further enhanced by modelled practices throughout the school day. A healthy approach to drinking water, eating healthily, active lifestyles, healthy emotional well being and developing independence in self care are all promoted alongside positive relationships and communication.
Trained kidsafe (accredited program) tutors deliver a child friendly, preventative children’s mental health and safeguarding programme within both EY and KS1 which complements and further develops the schools PSHE/RSE provision, empowering children in keeping themselves safe.
