PE - Physical Education

Intent

At SWINS we promote a love of sport and enjoyment of physical activity for all ‘Fit, fun, forever’.

Through Physical Education we aim to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing confidence and competence in a range of physical activities. We aim to improve health and well-being, promote active participation and lifelong learning, and for each child to fulfil their potential. We aim to ensure that the children’s experience of Physical Education is positive and motivating and that children’s attitudes to a healthy lifestyle are firmly embedded in our curriculum.

Our high quality PE curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

Implementation

All children at SWINS receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum. Every child accesses all of the key areas of the subject on offer at our school. Teachers plan PE with clear progression of skills and knowledge to ensure the curriculum offer is one all children can access it at an age appropriate level.

At SWINS we have high expectations of progress for all children in this subject and where required activities are differentiated to meet the needs and learning styles of pupils,  removing any barriers to learning needs as well as providing challenges appropriate to their stage of development.

Local expert providers are brought in to upskill staff and widen the experiences we can offer all our children. Through a variety of activities over the year the children will get better at PE. Children who would benefit from more activity are identified and offered yoga, smart moves and chances for extra activity within the school day.

At SWINS careful timetabling, including additional outdoor learning time and an expectation of 80% activity in a lesson, ensures PE is given the time priority required. Our curriculum incorporates a variety of sports, including gymnastics, athletics, games, karate, yoga, tennis, dance and apparatus. This exposure to a wide range of active experiences helps all children develop confidence and begin to develop an appreciation of their own, and others, strengths and weaknesses.

Impact

Our children are able to remain active for increasing periods, building their fitness and stamina through PE and active play in lessons and at playtime.

Our goal is that all children will participate with enthusiasm in PE, they will acquire new skills,  be able to say what they are better at and what area of PE they like. They will apply their good  fundamental skills in a range of situations, both alone and in groups and be positive and reflective about their performance and those in their group.

Some children will, as a result of their experiences of PE in school, join out of school clubs and/or our extra curricular activities in after school clubs.
