Science

Intent

At SWINS we aim to develop curious, inquisitive learners who are eager to find out why or how. The science curriculum is designed to develop scientifically informed, caring and responsible individuals who can think critically and make informed choices about themselves, the environment and the role of science within society. Our aim is for all children to practically explore, discover and question the world around them so that they have a deeper understanding of the world within which we all live. The range of stimulating practical experiences planned help children secure and extend their scientific knowledge and vocabulary. We will foster children’s resilience and perseverance in tasks as they learn to work in an ordered and scientific way.  Across school there is a positive attitude to science learning as a core subject within the classrooms and reinforce an expectation that all children are capable of achieving high standards in science.

Implementation

At SWINS, we use a well- developed, consistent and coherent planning that ensures children are provided with planned lessons, assessment, progression, and engaging resources to support all the requirements of Science within the National Curriculum and related strands of the EYFS.

Across KS1 Science topics are planned across the year and delivered as a weekly lesson and the Plan science assessment materials are used to support the structuring and delivery of the curriculum. Our Science teaching combines a well planned progression for the learning of key scientific knowledge alongside the developing skills of science as a process of enquiry. Planning refers to previous learning and builds on the skills and knowledge that the children have already been taught in this subject area. Children use a range of methods to communicate their scientific learning and present it in a range of appropriate ways including using ICT, diagrams, graphs and charts.

The children will develop their scientific skills through a planned skills progression and range of motivating practical experiences. Where possible and relevant children are given the opportunity to take part in place base learning which brings alive their study.

Children are made aware of topical, age appropriate scientific issues to understand the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future. This knowledge provides the opportunities begin to make decisions about how they chose to live.
