Intent
Religious Education builds children’s sense of identity and belonging within the world in which they live. At South Walney Infant & Nursery School we aim to encourage deep thought and personal reflection on big questions and ideas. We want children to share their own thoughts and learn to be open-minded to the views of others. Children are encouraged to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.
Our aim is to develop children’s respectful attitudes towards others including people with different faiths and beliefs. We want to foster an understanding of diversity within the school, local community and wider area. Through a creative and ambitious R.E curriculum, we aim for all children to develop their thinking and knowledge.
Implementation
At SWINS, we use a well developed, consistent and coherent planning that ensures children are provided with planned lessons, assessment, progression, and engaging resources to support all the requirements of Religious Education within the National Curriculum and related strands of the EYFS. We follow the Cumbria SACRE agreed syllabus for Religious Education.
Children from Reception onwards participate in a weekly RE lesson which follows the content and progression set out by the syllabus.
Planning refers to previous learning and builds on the skills and knowledge that the children have already been taught in this subject area.
The children will develop a variety of enquiry-based skills through the study of books, video, photographs and texts. Where possible and relevant children are given the opportunity to take part in place base learning which brings alive their study or have visitors come into school to share their first hand experiences with the children.
We plan to ensure children are aware of and show respect for a wide variety of religious celebrations and festivals, as well as age appropriate topical religious issues. The importance of belief and values upon our world will be shared, and with this knowledge children can begin to make decisions about how they chose to live.
