Geography

Intent

At SWINS we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as well as a curiosity, excitement and understanding about their world and a place in it.  We intend to help children to see the world through the eyes of a geographer and to foster an appreciation of the beauty of the natural world.

Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills and feeds a child’s natural inquisitiveness. We work to promote children’s interest and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a developing understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

We will use our local area and context as a starting point for learning whenever possible to ensure learning feel purposeful and relevant.

Implementation

At SWINS, we use a well developed, consistent and coherent planning that ensures children are provided with planned lessons, assessment, progression, and engaging resources to support all the requirements of Geography within the National Curriculum and related strands of the EYFS.

Across KS1 Geography topics are planned across the year and delivered in blocks as a weekly lesson or as part of a cross curricular topic to ensure full coverage is met.

Planning refers to previous learning and builds on the skills and knowledge that the children have already been taught in this subject area

The children will develop a variety of geographical skills through the study of map work, weather reports, newspapers and geographical texts. Where possible and relevant children are given the opportunity to take part in place base learning which brings alive their study.

We also plan to ensure children are aware of topical geographical issues, the importance of sustainability and human action upon our world and with this knowledge begin to make decisions about how they chose to live.

Impact

As a result of the skill and knowledge that they will gain our children will develop their curiosity and understanding of the world and their place in it. They will be encouraged to feel a sense of responsibility for their environment and feel empowered to make a positive difference as they grow.
