Reading and Phonics
Reading is at the heart of all we do here at SWINS. We seek to develop a lifelong love of reading and provide children with a wealth of reading material, introducing them to various authors and different types of genres and texts.
Success for All – FFT Phonics programme
We use the ‘Success for All’ teaching programme to systemically teach phonics. This is a fully comprehensive programme where children start learning single letter sounds in the Autumn term of reception progressing to more complex letter combinations in Year 1. This progression prepares children for the Statutory phonics screening that takes place at the end of Year 1.
Phonics is taught every day and children apply their phonics knowledge alongside additional reading sessions.
Super Six
Reading for pleasure
Reading for pleasure and listening to stories are an essential part of SWINS life. We have used a core book system for many years to engage children with texts and a love of reading. Children take home reading for pleasure books alongside their phonically decodable books. These books are for sharing and talking about with their grown ups and help introduce children to a range of authors and illustrators.
We have now extended this with our SUPER SIX programme of read aloud books. We have chosen 6 books each half term to read aloud to children. The books cover a range of genres and introduce children to different themes and ideas. You can see our Super Six for each year group below.
