Computing

Intent

At SWINS we recognise that technology plays a significant role in society today. Computational thinking is a skill all children must be taught if they are to be able to participate effectively and safely in this digital world. We want our pupils to be digitally literate, responsible citizens who are read and able to respond to the technologies that will shape their futures.

A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use their creativity, problem solving and communication skills. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.

The education our pupils require to thrive in the digital environment is planned across the entire curriculum.

Pupils at SWINS are introduced to a range of technology, including iPads, programmable toys and recording devices allowing them to continually practice, improve and further develop the skills they learn.

Implementation

At SWINS, we use a well-developed, consistent and coherent planning that ensures children are provided with planned lessons, assessment, progression, and engaging resources to support all the requirements of Computing within the National Curriculum and the related strands of the EYFS.

Within the EYFS, computing is taught through a cross curricular approach which is supported by the use of the resource Mini Mash.

Across KS1 Computing lessons are planned across the year and delivered as a weekly lesson as outlined by the planning from the Purple Mash programme. As well as discrete teaching, computing is incorporated in teaching across the whole of the curriculum. We teach a curriculum that enables children to become effective users of technology. Planning refers to previous learning and builds on the skills and knowledge that the children have already been taught in this subject area.

The Education for a Connected World tool is used to support teaching and learning in computing and PSHE so our children are enabled to live knowledgeably, responsibly and safely in a digital world.

To deliver and develop this area of learning the school has a well maintained infrastructure which supports the use of iPads across school. All i-pads and computers are protected with a comprehensive firewall managed by a ICT specialist firm, employed by school, to protect children when accessing the internet.

We also plan to ensure children are aware of the ever changing impact of technology in the world in which they live now, and for their future lives.

Impact

Within Computing we encourage a creative and collaborative environment in which pupils can learn to express and challenge themselves. The success of the curriculum itself will be assessed via the analysis of yearly progress data, conducting regular pupil voice sessions and lesson observations. This will then inform future adaptations of the Purple Mash scheme of work and help to ensure that progression is evident throughout school. Learners will develop a respect for technology and its uses, know how to use technology safely, develop their problem-solving skills through enquiry and hopefully develop a love of computing.
